Climbing the ladder, he took them down one by one.
..Dickins, Fielding, Austin
Mother had amassed her own library of classics.
..Spark, Wolf, Browning
The pages of old books stirred such passions. And now generated such warmth. He took the box outside remembering how he read to her every day.
Her choice not his. He would have liked to play with the other boys but she wanted him ‘educated’. She taunted his slow reading, his inability to recite Keats.
But not anymore. He threw another couple onto the pile.
..Hardy, Eliot.
His neighbour laughed: “Great bonfire you’ve got there!”
Another dark response to Charli’s flash fiction prompt at the Carrot Ranch!
March 2, 2016 prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) write a story that includes a library. You can honor the libraries in your own experience, dream about libraries of the future or explore a community without one.

Brilliant flash fire you built! This passage: “The pages of old books stirred such passions. And now generated such warmth.” Foreshadows the end…wow, what a feat in 99 words! Not too dark; you did add flames. 😉

The relationships we have with our parents are complex. Some end with forgiveness, others sadly not. Clearly his had ended in the latter. I was sad that things were the way they were for him, but I was not surprised by what he was doing; brilliant in some peculiar way. My optimists theory is that he didn’t want his pain, and energy that no doubt was stored in those pages from spreading to anyone else. I hope he found the peace he was looking for afterwards. Fantastic flash!

Lisa, Lisa, Lisa! How could you create such a monster! And I’m not sure which of your characters I mean. I understand the need to destroy and release the pain. But, oh the books! Brilliantly done! So out of character.

Fab twist! I love this! Although the thought of burning books is utterly horrific… In this context, it actually adds to the desperation and (like Anne said) satisfaction. Really. Brilliant.

Ha, fabulous story, Lisa. Much as I hate the idea of anyone burning books, I can see he’d find this extremely satisfying.
